Em muitos locais arqueológicos foram encontradas representações de pessoas a dançar à volta de um tambor.\nEmbora a maior parte dos instrumentos de percussão seja muito simples\, muitos instrumentos são compostos por diversas partes ou instrumentos \,com alturas ou registos diferentes.
